Tunk Mountain– Loop hike up Tunk Mountain with a side trip around Hidden Ponds Trail
Distance: 4.6 miles
Location: Sullivan, Maine. Just off Rt 182
Parking: One parking area right off rt 182. Plenty of space including a kiosk with hiking info and a vault toilet. .
Use: Good for hiking, snowshoeing.
Wildlife: A fairly remote area with ponds, marshy areas, streams and woods so there are ample opportunities for seeing wildlife. I would expect deer and wouldn’t be surprised to glimpse a moose. This area is open to hunting, so be sure to wear blaze orange during the hunting season
Wilderness Experience: The towns of Franklin and Sullivan are fairly close by, but they are not populous areas. This entire area surrounding the Donnell Pond Reserve Land is wilderness. Even from the overlooks you won’t see much civilization apart from a vast wind farm on the North Face overlook. It’s quiet once you get a short distance from Rt 182.
Trail: Forest floor with some roots and rocks. There are a few small stream crossings, but they are not substantial. The upper section of Tunk Mt trail is fairly steep, but there are a series of granite steps built into the trail.
Summit: 180 degree views are attainable from several viewpoints as you go up Tunk. The actual summit itself doesn’t provide any views, but all there are two overlooks on the north and south sides which are both worth visiting.
