Trout Brook Mountain– a short hike up Trout Brook Mountain on the north end of Baxter State Park
Distance: 3.5 mile loop hike with the option to add 1.6+ miles out to Billfish Pond.
Location: Baxter State Park about 3 miles from Matagamom Gate.
Parking: There is a parking area right at the trailhead, but it can only handle maybe 6 cars.
Use: Good for hiking. Running and snowshoeing may be possible, but the back side of the trail coming down from the ridge is quite steep.
Wildlife: Not much sign when we visited, but it’s remote enough that your chances are good.
Wilderness Experience: As you head up the trail from the parking area any noise from the Tote Road disappears. Mostly in tree cover, the wilderness seems more expansive than you’d think.
Trail: Forest floor, some climbing up ledge and down ledge and loose rock/dirt on the backside
Summit: No view at the summit, but there are views as you head up the ledges looking north over Lake Matagamon. The ledges as you head down offer some excellent views of the Travelers. This is really the reason to do this hike. The expansive views to the south make it a worthwhile hike even at a height of only 1767ft.
